Juan Leyva-Moral, PhD, received his initial nursing degree in 2002 at Escola d鈥橧nfermeria Santa Madrona in Barcelona (Spain). In 2004 he won one of Spain鈥檚 five nationwide scholarships to get postgraduate studies. His Master in Nursing Science was obtained in 2005 from the University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom). In 2002 he got an HIV Nursing Care postgraduate certification and in 2003 another postgraduate certification in Diabetes Care. In 2010 he received his PhD with honors from Universidad Europea de Madrid (Spain). 

His work experience includes primary care and community nursing. He has always had interest in chronic illness, vulnerable populations, discrimination, medicalization, humanized care and teaching innovation. Since 2010, his area of research has focused on HIV/AIDS nursing care. He is the principal investigator, with the collaboration of researchers from the USA, Peru and Spai,n of an ongoing study at Hospital Regional de Lambayeque (Chiclayo-Peru) focused on the experience of people living with HIV receiving care in Chiclayo.

Leyva-Moral recently initiated a series of collaboration with Peruvian universities in order to consolidate evidence-based practice among faculty, students and clinical nurses. Juan has taught in different nursing schools since 2005. He now works at Universidad Aut貌noma de Barcelona (Spain) teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has directed nine master's dissertations and three doctoral students.

In 2016, Leyva-Moral spent six months in Houston, Texas, at Texas Woman鈥檚 University as a visiting scholar under the supervision of Joan E. Edwards, PhD. He focused on understanding reproductive decision-making in Latina women living with HIV, both in the US and worldwide. The results of his review were published in the International Journal of Nursing Studies in 2017. Leyva-Moral has written several articles in Spanish nursing journals and some in international journals. He has also presented oral presentations and posters in numerous national and international scientific meetings and congresses.
