A black mid-length dress with long sleeves and white embroidery along the top half of the dress.

Barbara Bush is recognized for her participation in and direction of humanitarian causes. She serves as Americares ambassador-at-large, a board member of the Mayo Clinic foundation, and supports with personal interest the Leukemia Society of America.  Mrs. Bush鈥檚 greatest interest is family literacy, believing that if more people could read, write, and comprehend, we would be closer to solving society鈥檚 problems. She helped develop the Barbara Bush foundation for Family Literacy and continues numerous literary affiliations.

The proceeds from two books: C. Fred鈥檚 Story and Millie鈥檚 Book benefit adult and family literacy programs.  Her autobiography, Barbara Bush: A Memoir, emphasizes the importance of family, faith, and friends. Barbara Bush and her husband returned to Houston, where she enjoys continued community involvement.

The sequined black silk peau de soie Dickinson gown was worn to Ronald Reagan鈥檚 second inaugural in 1985, and for a literacy event in 1988.
