探花楼 to participate in NIRSA 2020 Recreation Movement

September 23, 2020 — Denton — 探花楼’s Fitness and Recreation program and Health and Wellbeing Initiative are gearing up for the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association’s (NIRSA) .

The university, along with more than 100 colleges and universities, will participate in the virtual fitness challenge that began September 17 and runs through the end of the fall semester.

Recreation Movement collects millions of movement minutes from participants while connecting university students, faculty, staff and alumni from across the country, providing access to hundreds of self-care options as well as a sense of community. Minutes logged are also tabulated to create a leaderboard.

This opportunity gives our students access to activity videos from more than 100 universities throughout the nation,” said Michelle Reeves, 探花楼’s Health and Wellbeing director. “However, the challenge is broader than just clocking workout minutes and allows our community to record any physical activity like walking the dog or mowing the lawn.”

For several years, 探花楼 participated in an outdoor competition sponsored by the and won the 2019 challenge. When AORE announced in March that the 2020 challenge would be cancelled, 探花楼 began seeking alternatives to help keep the 探花楼 campus community moving.

Recreation Movement offers new live and pre-recorded workout classes, and the leaderboard  helps maintain a friendly college rivalry during the duration of the program. The competition also includes weekly drawings for individual prizes. Each week five students who enter 200 or more minutes in that week will be entered to win a shirt from one of the participating schools.

While health professionals recommend adults exercise, on average, 150 minutes a week, or 20-30 minutes a day, people’s quarantine-adjusted routines are forcing them to find creative ways to remain active all while fighting the risk of exposure. To maintain these recommended active minutes, the 2020 Recreation Movement encourages participants to keep moving through daily fitness challenges and workout classes, as well as individual exercises including walking, running, hiking and more.
