Doctoral Program Research Methods Courses

Under the guidance of the graduate committee, each student must choose from the following tracks to help enhance the student鈥檚 researching knowledge and skills:

  • Qualitative Research Methods
  • Quantitative Research Methods
  • Electronic Information Retrieval
  • Rhetorical Criticism and Discourse Analysis
  • Holistic Research Methods
  • Foreign Language
  • American Sign Language

Qualitative Research Methods Track

Students may select a minimum of six hours from the following courses:

  • DNCE 5023: Methods of Research in Dance
  • FS 6793: Advanced Qualitative Research Methods in Family Science
  • NURS 6004: Theory and Foundations of Nursing Research
  • NURS 6024: Theory and Methods of Qualitative Nursing Research
  • PSY 6863: Qualitative Research Methods and Program Evaluation
  • READ 6483: Qualitative Research
  • READ 6493: Advanced Qualitative Research Design and Analysis
  • SOCI 5773: Qualitative Research Methods

Quantitative Research Methods Track

Students may select a minimum of six hours from the following courses:

  • CSCI 5663: Statistical Programming
  • CSCI 5793: Statistical Computer Packages
  • CSCI 5893: Statistical Packages II
  • CSCI 5921: Statistical Analysis with Computers
  • ELDR 6203: Statistics and Research Methodology I
  • ELDR 6213: Statistics and Research Methodology II
  • NURS 6014: Theories and Methods of Quantitative Nursing Research
  • PSY 5304: Advanced Psychological Statistics

Electronic Information Retrieval Track

Students may select a minimum of six hours from the following courses:

  • LS 5533: Internet Research for Non-Library Science Majors
  • LS 5553: Electronic Information Retrieval for Non-Library Science Majors
  • LS 6723: Critical Inquiry in Information Analysis

Rhetorical Criticism and Discourse Analysis Track

Students may select a minimum of six hours from the following courses:

  • ENG 5083: Bibliography and Research Methods
  • ENG 5283: Studies in Literary Criticism
  • ENG 5333: Studies in Writing in Networked Environments
  • ENG 5343: Rhetoric and Composition: Theory and Practice
  • ENG 5353: Rhetoric and Composition: Theory and Pedagogy of Electronic Texts
  • ENG 5373: Professional and Academic Communication
  • ENG 6083: Research Methods in Rhetoric and Composition
  • ENG 6313: Studies in Rhetorical Criticism and Discourse Analysis

Holistic Research Methods Track

Students may select a minimum of six hours from the following courses:

  • PSY 5353: Research Techniques
  • SOCI 6203: Seminar on Research Methods
